Patek Packaging aims to revolutionize food presentation and seamlessly combine convenience, tidiness, and affordability with our sugarcane plate collection

What is Sugarcane Bagasse?

Bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane juice extraction, is the fibrous residue left after crushing sugarcane. Rich in sugarcane fibre, this material substitutes traditional fibres like wood or straw in paper pulp for paper product manufacturing.

History

Clarence Birdseye discovered the use of sugarcane bagasse as a paper pulp substitute in the 1930s. Further development of this method occurred in a laboratory at Hacienda Paramonga, a sugar mill in Peru.

Bagasse is a paper pulp substitute in tropical and subtropical regions with high sugarcane production, such as Argentina, China, Colombia, India, Iran, and Thailand. While it is usable as fuel for sugar mill production, its high moisture content makes it particularly suitable for sugarcane paper production.

Market Projections

In 2022, the global industry of Bagasse plates had a value of $201.4 million. From 2023 to 2031, the bagasse plates market may achieve a CAGR of 6.7%, culminating in a projected valuation of $367.6 million by 2031.

About Paper Plates

The evolution of dining ware from traditional materials like metal and ceramic to eco-friendly alternatives such as paper has revolutionized the food packaging industry. Paper-made plates are more affordable, convenient, and environmentally sustainable. This shift has democratized access to dining essentials and reduced environmental impact.

History

Martin Keyes, hailing from Lempster, New Hampshire, is credited as the inventor of the paper plate. In 1903, Keyes introduced a novel product crafted from moulded paper pulp, which he subsequently launched to the market a year later.  This innovative creation marked the inception of the Keyes Fibre Company, a venture established by Keyes and his partners to manufacture paper plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is bagasse better than plastic in terms of biodegradability?

Bagasse is better than plastics because it’s a residue from sugarcane. It offers an eco-friendly and biodegradable substitute for plastic. Unlike plastics, which may take centuries to decompose, bagasse products, like sugarcane plates, naturally reintegrate into the ecosystem as organic matter, causing no environmental harm.

  • If you need to heat food on the plates, ensure they are microwave-safe to avoid potential chemical leaching or melting.
  • Choose compostable paper plates to facilitate eco-friendly disposal options and minimize waste.
